About the Event
Chameleon’s Journey™ is an overnight grief camp for children and teens coping with the death of a family member or other significant person in their life. It is based on a journey of discovery by a chameleon that lost a special friend.
Founded in 2000 and held annually at Camp Thunderbird in Lake Wylie, South Carolina, Chameleon's Journey has served over a 1,600 campers.
The grief camp revolves around activities that provide opportunities to express grief and other emotions through music, movement, visual art, and other forms of expression. Recreational activities are also part of the camp, allowing campers to meet the important need for physical activity - and fun. Campers ranging in age from 7-17, are supported in a confidential, safe, and caring environment and they come away from camp with an increased knowledge of the grieving process and valuable coping skills. They also develop new relationships to help them realize that they are not alone in their grief. Each year, over a dozen former campers who are now 'graduates of the program' come back for the weekend as members of the staff to share their past experiences and give the campers the opportunity to learn from someone who has 'been there'.
Chameleon’s Journey is provided free of charge and is made possible through the generous support of community members and civic organizations. Our 2019 Presenting Sponsor is the Sharin' Foundation - in memory of Ginger & Malcolm Combs. Other Caring Partners include The Capital Grille Charlotte, the Clair Bear Fund the Golda Schwartz Memorial Art Fund, Mr. & Mrs. Peter A. Brunnick, Caren Carr & Tony DiRamio, Laura Engel, Drew Keele, Kathryn M. Keele, Penny Krieger, David B. Krieger, Nayfee S. Krugler, Roy Snyder and Friends, and our Send a Kid to Camp sponsors.
