As a consultant for a UK based systems integrator, Pete worked for seven years engineering solutions for SMEs with a particular focus on bespoke software development, data mining, and financial applications. After a brief contracting spell in the US following a 4000 mile relocation, Pete joined Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region (HPCCR) in 2004 where he leads the Information Systems Department. Prior to his time in Florida, Dean held the position of Vice President of Operations for the Maryland and Mid-Atlantic region at Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care where he made significant contributions to the organization's mission of growth by addressing aging, complex chronic illness, and end-of-life concerns. Dean will focus on developing new markets to support the growth and expansion of VIA Health Partners. Dean's strategic insights into geographic expansion and growth have positioned organizations for future success and relevance. He will also work on building relationships with payers, providers and evolving health care plans and programs, as well as play a key role in VIA Health Partners’ governmental affairs work, closely monitoring regulatory affairs at both the state and national levels. Dean is widely recognized as a thought leader in the areas of risk-based payment models and the evolution of hospice and palliative care. His expertise leveraging hospice and palliative skillsets with advanced chronic illness populations driving better outcomes at lower costs has earned him a reputation for excellence in the field.

Peter A. Brunnick, CPA, President & CEO, VIA Health Partners President & CEO Peter A. Brunnick, CPA About Peter Brunnick is the President & Chief Executive Officer for Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region (HPCCR), a multi-specialty, post-acute care organization with a focus on advanced illness and end of life care services. HPCCR provides comprehensive hospice care, palliative medicine, and educational services to a daily caseload of approximately 2,200 patients and their families, reaching nearly 6,000 patients annually. Before accepting the position of President & CEO in February 2010, Pete served for 10 years as the Executive Vice President/Chief Financial Officer. Prior to joining HPCCR, he served as the Chief Financial Officer of the Givens Estates in Asheville, NC. A graduate of North Carolina State University, Pete is a certified public accountant and is a member of NCACPA. From 2007- 2009, he was the Chairman of the Board of Directors for The Carolina’s Center for Hospice and End of Life Care, also served as board treasurer, and was a 2007 recipient of the Center’s Spirit of Hospice Award. Pete was appointed by the Governor’s office to serve as a provider representative on the North Carolina Hospice Certificate of Need Methodology Task Force. In 2009, he was named not-for-profit CFO of the Year by the Charlotte Business Journal. Pete has served on the Governance Committee for The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO). He has also served on the Board of Directors for The Association for Home & Hospice Care of North Carolina since 2012; as Board Chair June 2014 to June 2016 and as Past Chair until June 2018. Pete has served as a board member of PACE of the Southern Piedmont and as a board member for The Employers Association (TEA). He was appointed by Governor Pat McCrory to serve a three-year term in the first ever hospice seat on the NC State Health Coordinating Council. Pete was the 2016 recipient of Leadership Charlotte’s Unsung Hero award. In 2020, Pete was elected to the national board of NHPCO. Pete has been married to his wife, Vicki, for 36 years and they have one son, Mason, who is a graduate of Harvard University and now lives in the Boston area.

VIA Health Partners provides hospice care in the home, in long-term care communities, in hospitals, and in our 6 inpatient hospice houses. What is Palliative Medicine? Palliative medicine is health care for individuals of any age who have a chronic, life-limiting illness. Palliative medicine is active care. It is care that aggressively seeks to improve quality of life by focusing on physical symptoms as well as emotional, social, and spiritual needs. While palliative medicine emphasizes pain control and other symptom management, patients do not have to forgo curative or restorative care. Palliative medicine also reaches out to address the needs of family members and caregivers to maximize support to the patient. Palliative medicine is provided by our Palliative Medicine Consultants program. What is the role of nurse on the hospice care team? Our staff nurses provide intermittent skilled nursing visits for pain and symptom management, plus education regarding care of the patient. How are the patient's personal care needs handled? When ordered by a physician, we provide certified, in-home aide services to help patients with personal care, including bathing, skin, mouth, and hair care. What is a "caregiving plan?" When a patient comes under hospice or palliative care, a plan of care is developed based on the needs of the patient and their family. This plan outlines the multilevel, clinical services that will be provided, and it is updated regularly to reflect the changing needs of the patient and family. What is the role of the medical social worker on the hospice care team? Our social workers provide counseling and support to the patient and family, including children, during this stressful time. Services may include assistance in identifying community resources, advice regarding financial, legal, and caregiving concerns that occur with a prolonged illness, as well as other individual services as appropriate. How is spiritual care provided? Our staff chaplains provide and/or coordinate spiritual care for patients and families by helping them find the spiritual comfort, strength, and hope consistent with their own values, beliefs, and practices. Spiritual care can also offer the support needed to explore, clarify, or resolve spiritual issues of concern. What bereavement or grief care services are available and to whom? We recognize the special needs of those who have experienced the death of a loved one, and we provide the individual and group support necessary to face grief. Grief services are available to families and loved ones of our patients, and are also available to anyone who resides in our community. What if the patient needs hospitalization? If hospitalization is needed, the care team will coordinate this transition and maintain contact with the patient and their family during the patient's stay in the hospital. We have contracts with all hospitals in our service area. What if a patient lives beyond six months? When the patient's physician signs the hospice certification, it signifies that he/she believes that, in their best medical estimate, life expectancy is six months or less if the illness takes its expected course. However, patients will not be discharged from our care if they exceed that time frame, as long as they meet the criteria for receiving hospice care. Does your organization care for children? VIA Health Partners is the only provider of a specialized children's program in our eight-county service area. The Kids Path® children's program specializes in caring for the unique needs of seriously ill children and their loved ones. What grief programs do you have for children? We offer individual sessions for children, grief camps for ages 7-16, and short term grief support groups in partnership with schools. What kind of community education is provided? Our specially trained staff and volunteers give presentations to civic groups, long term care communities, businesses, communities of faith, and other groups who want to learn more about our services and programs.
